Neighbour Day Summer Fest

Join us for 2019 SUMMER FEST!

For YYC Neighbour Day, we will be hosting (along with the Garage Sale) our first ever Summer Fest at the community association. Stop by from 11 am to 3 pm for an entire afternoon of activities provided by our amazing sponsors. Some of the great events we have planned are a bouncy house, carnival games, public skating, “Beat the Bucket” water-dunking, basketball, soccer, badminton, BBQ, and more! We are only able to bring you so many great activities due to our amazing sponsors: Cadence Chiropractic, Master Meats, Baboushkin DeJong Real Estate Group, Dairy Lane Cafe, Coca-Cola, and Amato Gelato! Thank you all again for your amazing support! Events like these allow the neighbourhood to connect and grow a our sense of community together.

So take some time on Saturday, June 15th and have some summer fun at the WHCA with SUMMER FEST!

Send Us Your Village Beer Receipts!

Neighbour Day is all about gathering, and Village Brewery was built with the purpose of gathering people around community. To support this, they are working with the Federation of Calgary Communities to offer rebates to  community associations for all Village beer purchases made by Calgarians throughout the month of June, as part of Neighbour Day celebrations.

Purchase any kind of Village beer from June 1 to June 30, 2019 and send a copy of your receipts to us at the West Hillhurst Community Association. Village Brewery will then donate 15% of all neighbourhood beer purchases back to us for future community-building initiatives! We will also make receipt donation boxes available in select liquor stores throughout the neighbourhood, so keep your eye out for them and make sure to submit your receipts! This funds go a long way for the WHCA and our fundraising efforts, and every little bit counts. You can also stop by the office at WHCA and drop your receipts off in person.

Raise a glass in honour of Neighbour Day on June 15, 2019 and help support your community!

East Parking Lot Closure

If you’re a regular visitor to the Community Association or the Bowview Pool, you’ve probably noticed the potholes and wear & tear throughout the pool-side of the east parking lot. So good news: repairs will be done in May/June to fill the potholes before the pool opens for the season!

Unfortunately, this means the pool-side of the parking lot will be inaccessible during construction.

Construction begins May 27th and is expected to last for a week. During this time, we expect the WHCA-side of the parking lot to be extra busy, so if you will be visiting during the week of May 27th to June 2nd, be prepared to find street and off-site parking.

We apologize for the inconvenience this causes and we appreciate your patience and understanding. These repairs are much needed for the damaged parking lot and need to be addressed before the pool reopens for the summer.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us and our staff will do their best to address them.

New & Returning External WHCA Programs

The West Hillhurst Community Association is a 70,000 square foot facility, which means we have room for a TON of activities. While we try to provide as much family-friendly programming as we can for the community, we also provide rental spaces for external programs to run within the facility (since it would be almost impossible for us to fill these rooms just ourselves!).

Some of our external renters have been with us fairly long-term. For more info on them, you can check out the External Programs page on our website. They include:

  • Go-Getters 50+
  • Pickleball
  • NCHL
  • Summit Kids
  • Balletiques
  • and more.

Be sure to check out their separate descriptions and websites, available on the External Programs page.

We are also always looking for new renters to run programs! For instance, right now we provide space for fencing, karate, dance, fitness, and more! If you’re ever looking for more information on a program, class, or course offered at the WHCA, stop by the facility or give us a call and we will be happy to assist you as best we can.

If you’ve got ideas for programming you’d like to see at the WHCA, let us know! We want to have something for everyone.

Child Safety & the WHCA

Safety should be a top priority at any age.

Get your kids in a safety-orientated mindset at an early age with child safety classes at the WHCA with certified instruction from Child Safe Canada.

Starting in May, we will have Home Alone Safety & the Babysitter Program for ages 6 and up.

Home Alone Safety prepares youths for all of the important steps for being on their own. This interactive safety course will provide them with the skills and confidence they need to be able to handle unsafe and uncomfortable situations they may encounter while you’re away. Some of the skills they will learn are:

  • first aid
  • fire safety
  • answering the door & phone
  • flooding toilets and plumbing
  • and more.

Home Alone Safety will be held on Sunday, May 26th at the WHCA. Registration is currently closed and enrollment is full for this class.

The Babysitter Program teaches youth ages 10+ who look to be future babysitters how to be safe while also building their self-esteem. Skills taught through this course include:

  • being a responsible babysitter
  • safety & injury prevention
  • handling emergencies
  • preparing meals
  • feeding & caring for babies,
  • and more.

The Babysitter Program will be held on Sunday, June 23rd at the WHCA. Registration is open and enrollment will close on June 4th, so register soon!

Thank You for Your Clean-Up Efforts

We would like to take an opportunity to thank all of our community members who participated in Spruce It Up! and made our community clean-up day such a success.

With help of our volunteers, area businesses, and the city, we were able to host a success spring-cleaning in the arena parking lot. We hope we were able to take some of your pesky waste and recyclables off your hands and free up some space and time for you in your cleaning efforts!

The City of Calgary provided us alone with 3 truck loads of waste removal, with 6850 kg of garbage removed and 250 kg of organics!

Thanks again for making this event a success and we will see you once again next spring.

Get a Helping Hand With Your Spring Projects

The Job from the Jar Day contest is coming to an end at the end of April, so you have a little over two-weeks to get your entry in if you haven’t already!

March & April’s JobJar contest in West Hillhurst will  see a lucky community resident and a neighbour of their choice win a free day with a handyman to help them out with their spring projects! Whether you need a hand cleaning up your yard, moving some things around the house, completing some home renovation projects, or whatever you can think of, the JobJar Skilled Doers will be able to spend some time helping you get those projects done. So if you’ve got any sort of project on the go, and would like to help out a neighbour in the process, then throw your name in the hat and see if you win.

For the West Hillhurst contest, we were lucky enough to get West Hillhurst Paint & Design on board to donate a gallon of paint for you and a neighbour of your choice! How’s that for an extra cherry on top?

To enter West Hillhurst’c Job from the Jar Day contest, visit www.jobjar.ca/jjp/?westhillhurst and fill out the entry form. We will announce the winner at the conclusion of the contest at the end of April.

Good luck!
