Spread the Love

We, as people, should always showcase care, love, appreciation and respect to our partners, friends and strangers, but February 14 or St. Valentine Day is the annual traditional day when we show such emotions to our loved ones.  It’s a special day where extended efforts are passed along, flower shops empty, chocolate & candy is given and often, a date night to a beautiful restaurant for dinner is had.

Growing up, Valentine’s Day was one of my favourite days in school as we all got to exchange Valentine’s cards, candy and often had a movie afternoon.  I, as a child, did not have much knowledge of the day and sadly that continues today.

As reported on the History Channel website, “The history of Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition….

DID YOU KNOW?! “Approximately 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas.”

Have you been procrastinating and still have no idea what to do for the evening?  Here are some of my traditional and non-traditional gifts and date ideas.

Dinner date at a fine dining restaurant – Take a chance and try something different.  Go to a restaurant that one wouldn’t normally go to.  Experiment with the type of food that you would usually eat.  Have fun with not only showing your love to your partner, but build a memory that is original to your life.
Stay-in, order-in and pretend it is the weekend – Why not create a romantic evening at home?  Set out tea-lights or other candles.  Getting a bouquet of flowers?  Why not take a couple of the pedals and lay them around the house?  Order in your favourite food, play some video or board games, throw on a movie and watch one’s favourite shows.  This will be a relaxing but romantic way to just spend time together.
Take an evening walk – Bundle up and choose a favourite park, path or area in the city and go for a late night walk.  The cool fresh air is the perfect excuse to cuddle up or hold hands.  Enjoy the sights and sounds of wilderness, while appreciating the connection and presence of each other.
Head out for a treat – If you and your significant other decided to take it easy and just enjoy each other’s company, why not enjoy it with your favourite treat.  Head out for ice cream or pick up your favourite snacks to share together on the couch.
Take a weekend vacation – Is Valentine’s Day too commercialized for you?  Why not take the traditional ‘love’ day and make it a weekend event.  Head of town to your favourite tourist destination and spend a weekend together.  What about going ice fishing?  There are so many non-traditional ways to have fun on Valentine’s Day, so have fun with it.

Of course, these are just a couple of simple ideas that I had.  I try to do something different every year, so it’s important to let the readers know that they can too.

What do you do on Valentine’s Day?  Do you celebrate more traditionally or do you like breaking the molds of it?    Tell us what you do to celebrate the day.

Happy Chinese New Years

Happy Chinese New Year!    And what important year it will be.  It’s that time of year in the Chinese culture where celebrations take place.  This year, the Chinese New Year is on Friday, February 16, 2018.

As reported on When-Is, “according to the Chinese 12-year animal zodiac cycle, the Chinese year beginning in 2018 is the year of the Dog. Each Chinese zodiac year begins on Chinese New Year’s Day.”

If you want to learn more about the Chinese New Year and the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, check out the China Highlights website.  You will find information about your zodiac sign of your birth year, as well as the traditional Chinese superstitions.

“Chinese New Year, also known as the “Spring Festival” in modern Mainland China, is China’s most important traditional festival, celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar, which consists of both Gregorian and lunar-solar calendar systems. Chinese New Year can begin anytime between late January and mid-February.

“China’s Spring Festival public holiday starts on the Chinese New Year, and lasts for 7 days.”

Are you looking to take part in the festivities that will be held within the city?  Check out the Calgary Chinese Culture Centre Association website to see the schedule of events, venues, times and additional information.  Festivities run from February 10 – 18, 2018

Or you can check out the events below and help support Calgary’s diverse community:

Film Production @ WHCA

For the last while. a team of exceptional film and TV production specialists have made the WHCA home to the location of their short web series, The Parent Council

Found on the Story Hive website, “Conner is a stay-at-home Dad who joins his daughter’s elementary school Parent Council because he wants to feel like he’s contributing more, and also to connect with other adults! When he gets there, he finds a diverse group of people (and personalities) who are all passionate about doing what they can for their kids and for the school – but everyone has VERY different ideas about what’s best for all. This is a group of people that would probably not be together outside of the Council but all share something in common: being parents and loving their kids. The series will be looking at the challenges (& sometimes the frustrations) of parenting through the lens of different cultures and different beliefs while trying to find common ground…as well as getting more sleep!

The Parent Council has been taking advantage of the awesome spaces that the WHCA community center has available to rent.  WHCA wants everyone to check out this silly, but real short and tell us what you think.  Please vote 5 stars ***** for the film and let the talents continue for Calgary and area.

Contest voting opened February 5, 2018 and will close this Friday, February 9, 2018.  Don’t delay and vote today.  By doing so, the film  and production team could win a package from Telus, that will help launch their web series and continue to support the community.  Better yet, WHCA will be the prime location for filming and producing the film.

Support the local talent and help continue to put West Hillhurst on the map for film and television production.  To watch and vote, click here.  For more information, please read below:

Our Web series pilot The Parent Council, which is about a stay-at-home Dad who joins his daughter’s elementary school Parent Council, is now available for viewing online at https://www.storyhive.com/project/show/id/2930

Voting

Voting started Monday the 5th at noon PST and goes until noon Friday the 9th at noon PST. Everyone can vote once a day PER DEVICE.
